In 1997, he was appointed as a Senior Lecturer at Aberdeen University and Honorary Consultant Surgeon and undertook a prestigious combined clinical and research fellowship in North America during this period, representing UK Orthopaedics.
In 2002, he became a Professor at the Robert Gordon’s University, Aberdeen and continues to practice as a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic surgeon at NHS Grampian.
Alan introduced arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and elbow into Aberdeen and has had a major role in modernising Aberdeen’s Trauma Service where he continues to specialise in the treatment of complex trauma and has extensive local, national and international research interests and collaborations. He continues to supervise Research Fellows undertaking full-time research.
Until recently he was a visiting Professor at the University of Perugia, Italy.
Alan continues to be a Clinical Adviser to a number of Orthopaedic multi-national companies as well as being the Clinical Director of Softcell Medical Ltd, a small local company that is developing a new diagnostic medical device that will have multiple clinical uses.
For the last 15 years he has been the senior clinical advisor to Scottish Health Innovations Limited, the Innovation wing of NHS Scotland, and was recognised as the Scottish Life Sciences Innovator of the Year in 2012.
