Dr Collins held an ARC research grant and was awarded a doctorate (M.D.) for research into bone cell biology in 1992, and achieved specialist recognition in General (Internal) Medicine and Rheumatology in 1995
He was appointed Consultant Rheumatologist to Great Western Hospital NHS Trust, Swindon in 1995 and awarded fellowship of both the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London and of Ireland in 1998. He’s also a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, a member of the British Society for Rheumatology and a member of the British Medical Association.
Dr Collins has held the posts of Royal College of Physician’s college tutor, Royal College of Physician’s regional speciality advisor, Clinical Director for acute medicine and then for non-acute medicine, and has also been Director of Research for the trust, vice chair of the Western Comprehensive Local Research Network board and divisional director of the West of England NIHR comprehensive research network.
He practices all aspects of clinical rheumatology and also holds a specialist bone health clinic in Swindon.
As well as teaching and supervision in the department he has research interests into mechanisms of assessment of bone health and treatment of inflammatory arthritis.
