Ms Emma de Sousa is a Consultant Oncoplastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Breast Surgeon.
Having studied Medicine at New College, Oxford University (BM, BCh, MA), she returned to the North West, where she grew up, for her surgical training in 1996. Always with a focus on Breast Surgery, she has worked with some of the leading plastic and breast surgeons in the region. Between 2001 and 2003, she carried out molecular research into breast cancer at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne Australia, to gain a Doctorate of Medicine (DM), and has presented her work nationally and internationally. During her National TIG Fellowship at the prestigious Nottingham Breast Institute in 2013, Ms de Sousa worked closely with innovative, specialist breast and plastic surgeons. Following a successful time as Consultant Breast Surgeon at the Oxford University John Radcliffe Hospital, Ms de Sousa chose to return to the North West to pursue her career at home.
Her NHS practice is at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. Based in the Linda McCartney Centre of this busy teaching hospital, the Liverpool Breast Unit provides a symptomatic, screening, risk-reducing and reconstructive service and is nationally recognised in peer review assessments as exceptional.
Ms de Sousa is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) and is Course Convenor and faculty member for Association of Breast Surgery (ABS) Courses. She is part of the ABS Cosmetic Surgery committee. She actively recruits to research trials and teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students in Liverpool, regionally and nationally.
