Personal Profile
Mr Dickson was awarded the ASGBI Medal as the outstanding candidate in the final sitting of the FRCS Intercollegiate Exam in September 2006 prior to his appointment to the West of Scotland Pancreatic Unit in 2007. His subspecialty practice includes major pancreatic resections, the management of severe acute pancreatitis, and advanced pancreatico-biliary endoscopy including ERCP and EUS. He has a particular interest in gallstone disease and safe laparoscopic cholecystectomy (keyhole gallbladder removal).
Mr Dickson is Programme Director for GESTS (Glasgow Emergency Surgery and Trauma Symposium), the flagship surgical conference he created for the RCPSG. He also created and directs LIMiT (Life-saving Interventions and Manoeuvres in Trauma) – a unique one-day cadaveric trauma course. His academic, teaching and research interests are in pancreatic surgery, trauma, ERAS and peri operative care. He has lectured and taught extensively in these fields and continues to publish and author book chapters on these subjects.
Over the course of Mr Dickson's career, he has delivered more than 130 invited lectures, published 41 papers, given 50 oral or poster presentations on scientific work, and authored 12 book chapters. In addition he has sat on 12 committees and held 9 leadership roles (past and present over the last five years). He is the Regional Lead for HPB Surgery and chairs the weekly West of Scotland Multi-Disciplinary Team Meeting. He is Lead Clinician for Surgical Critical Care and the Pancreatic ERAS Programme. He was privileged to receive an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2019 in recognition of his commitment to education and training.
In 2019 Mr Dickson was awarded the James IV Association of Surgeons Travelling Fellowship – one of the most prestigious international awards for surgeons – and visited pancreatic centres of excellence throughout Europe and North America. He has clinical interests in numerous areas including pancreatic issues. He sees patients for abdominal pain, pancreatitis, sphincter of Oddi dysfunction, biliary and gallstone disease, and pancreatic cysts, amongst many others. He also sees patients for treatments including skin lesion removal surgery.
Mr Dickson has a face-to-face clinic on a Monday evening from 1900hr and a telephone only clinic on a Friday evening from 1700hr.
