His research was centred around the development of novel, safer non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and the association of COX-2 with gastric cancer. He had further exposure to advanced endoscopic techniques, including Endoscopic Mucosal Resection and Endoscopic Ultrasound. He was appointed as a Consultant Gastroenterologist in Sheffield in 1999, and is a widely experienced general gastroenterologist with a specialist interest in endoscopy, especially colonoscopy.
Mr Donnelly performs advanced therapeutic colonoscopy and gastroscopy.
He is an accredited Bowel Cancer Screening Colonoscopist and Bowel Cancer Screening Examiner. He is also Clinical Director of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, and sits on the Bowel Cancer Screening Assessment Board. Mr Donnelly is the Professional Clinical Adviser for Colonoscopy to the Yorkshire and Humber Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
He has national reputation within the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme with consistently excellent Key Performance Indicators Director since 2001 of the Sheffield Endoscopy Training Centre – 1 of the original 10 endoscopy training centres established 20 years ago.
Mr Donnelly has an international reputation in endoscopy training, delivering courses in Copenhagen (Denmark), Ghent (Belgium), Khartoum (Sudan), Chennai (India) to name a few.
He also acts as Faculty on endoscopy courses throughout the UK, including St Marks Hospital, Northwick Park, St Georges Hospital, London, Royal Liverpool Hospital etc. He currently runs 10-12 hands-on courses each year in Sheffield and has acted as faculty on over 200 such courses, training the next generation of endoscopists. Mr Donnelly was a former member then secretary of the Endoscopy Committee of the British Society of Gastroenterology.
He convenes the Hands on Endoscopy Village at the British Society of Gastroenterology Annual Meeting.
