Professional profile

Professor Brostoff set up the first Allergy Clinic at the Middlesex Hospital and organised the Diagnostic Immunology Laboratory which specialised in autoimmune serology and became the WHO reference laboratory. He was a member of the WHO working party for Allergy and Clinical Immunology and wrote the protocols for setting up such units

The clinic became a referral centre for patients with a range of acute and chronic allergy conditions with a specialisation in food allergy and food intolerance and also chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and understandably autoimmune disorders. Professor Brostoff published a major textbook on Food Allergy and Intolerance (pp1000) now in its 2nd edition, also a book for patients ‘The Complete Guide to Food Allergy and Intolerance’, now in its 4th edition and with Ivan Roitt a basic and clinical textbook for university students titled ‘Immunology’, now in it 8th edition.

Professor Brostoff is currently Director of the Diet and Gastrointestinal Health Group at Kings College London, where immune/allergic reactions in the oropharynx and gut are studied. In addition, he is Honorary Consultant for the Department of Gastroenterology at St Thomas’ Hospital and Honorary Consultant Immunologist to the Division of Oral Medicine at the Guys Dental Institute.
