Clinical interests
  • Mr Wilson is a specialist knee surgeon and has an interest in all aspects of soft tissue knee reconstruction and knee replacement surgery. His sports knee practice involves the treatment of both amateur and elite athletes. He also has a large arthritis practice.
  • He has an interest in complex key hole or athroscopic procedures including meniscal repair and transplantation. His practice involves a variety of treatments for cartilage damage including Chondroplasty, Microfracture, Matrix Autologous Chondrocyte Transplantation and Mosaicoplasty or OATS.
  • As well as performing more than 150 primary ACL reconstructions each year, Mr Wilson carries out a significant number of revision ligament and multi-ligament reconstructions.
  • Mr Wilson treats a significant number of patients with patella-femoral instability. The mainstay of treatment is either soft tissue or  medial patella-femoral ligament reconstruction or bony realignment procedures.
  • Mr Wilson has a large knee arthroplasty practice which includes total, partial and revision knee replacement surgery. For the young arthritic patient, knee replacement surgery is not universally successful as a treatment for osteoarthritis. The alternative is realignment or knee osteotomy. At Basingstoke Mr Wilson has one of the largest osteotomy practices in the country. This realignment procedure works by taking the pressure away from the damaged area of the knee and moves it to a more normal compartment.
  • Mr Wilson is heavily committed to teaching and research. He regularly presents at National and International meetings. He has published extensively. He is frequent faculty member of a number of high profile knee courses in the UK.

Professional Profile

Mr Wilson completed a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry at the University of Manchester before beginning his training at St Bartholomew’s Medical school in 1989. He qualified as a doctor in 1994 and began his basic surgical training which included Plastic surgery at the Radcliffe Infirmary. He demonstrated anatomy at Cambridge University where he also lectured in Physiology and Pathology.

He joined the North West Thames Orthopaedic training programme in 1999. From an early stage he focused his training on the knee working with several of London’s leading knee surgeons.

He spent his final year of training as a fellow in knee and sports surgery at the Brisbane Orthopaedic Sports Medicine centre.  This is one of the most highly sort after knee fellowships. Here he learnt several highly specialised procedures including meniscal transplantation.

He was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at The North Hampshire Hospital in 2005 where he is now clinical lead for knee surgery.

Mr Wilson has developed an expertise in osteotomy around the knee and is one of the most experienced osteotomy surgeons in the UK. The North Hampshire Hospital is home to the only UK based Osteotomy course. This is specifically designed to teach UK consultants the latest techniques in this procedure.

Mr Wilson is a member of the Wessex knee group which is a highly select group of senior knee surgeons within the Wessex region.
