Professional profile
Professor Ajith Siriwardena qualified from the University of Manchester in 1982 and undertook General Surgical Training in Manchester, Edinburgh and the United States.
Professor Siriwardena undertook advanced Liver Surgical Training in Paris and subsequently held a consultant and senior lecturer post in the Hepatobiliary Unit of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh prior to moving to his present appointment at the Manchester Royal Infirmary in 1999.
Professor Siriwardena has a high-volume practice specialising in liver and pancreatic surgery. His specialist interests are in the treatment of patients with liver and pancreatic tumours. Professor Siriwardena has undertaken over 300 major liver and pancreas cancer resections and 500 laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedures for gallstones.
Professor Siriwardena runs a research programme, which examines risk factors in pancreatic cancer and genetic markers.
Professor Siriwardena is a member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI), the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons (AUGIS) and the International Hepato-Pancreato-Billiary Association (IHBA).
