Professional profile

Mr Christopher Bache qualified from Birmingham University in 1990 and subsequently spent 3 years junior surgical training in Nottingham before returning to the West Midlands Orthopaedic training scheme. During this time he became very interested in Childrens Orthopaedics and after completing his training he went on a Fellowship to Melbourne Childrens Hospital. This is the largest Childrens Hospital in the Southern hemisphere and its Orthopaedic Fellowship one of the most prestigious and sought after.

On returning to the UK in 2003 Mr Bache was appointed as consultant to Birmingham Childrens Hospital and The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. In addition he runs outreach clinics at Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley.

The majority of his practice concerns conditions related to the child, adolescent and young adult hip. At present Mr Bache is the lead clinician for paediatric hip disease at Birmingham Childrens Hospital.

Mr Bache specialises in the management of Hip Dysplasia (clicky hip, dislocated hip), Perthes disease and Slipped Upper Femoral Epiphysis (SUFE). Many adult hip problems are the sequelea of these paediatric conditions and he has set up a clinic specifically for young adults with hip pain. The aim of this is to perform joint preserving surgery in the hope of avoiding joint replacement at a later stage.

The procedures that Mr Bache performs include osteotomies (altering the position of the bone), for conditions such as shallow hip, and hip arthroscopy which is useful for the treatment of non arthritic hip conditions such as impingement and sports injuries.

Some of the procedures that Mr Bache performs are relatively new and he is involved heavily in research in these areas. He has more than 20 publications in peer reviewed journals and has written book chapters and edited a text book.

Mr Bache is regularly involved with teaching and has been a faculty member on several national courses and conferences.

He is also part of The Midland Orthopaedic Practice.
