Ian Finlay was the first specialist colorectal surgeon to be appointed in Scotland. A graduate of Manchester University, he trained in the West of Scotland and undertook specialist training at the University of Minnesota USA and St Marks’ Hospital in London.

He founded the internationally recognised, Department of Coloproctology, at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and has been responsible for the specialist training of many colorectal specialist colorectal surgeons currently practicing around the world. He is a specialist in the surgery of large bowel cancer, pouch surgery for inflammatory bowel disease, surgery for prolapse and incontinence and the management of any rectal disorders including fistulae.

Ian Finlay has led research into the nature and treatment of several colorectal conditions. He has written over 100 peer reviewed articles, book chapters and invited editorials clinical journals. He regularly gives lectures at National and International meetings and is at present an executive officer of the British Journal of Surgery. A notable research achievement has been the development of an artificial anal sphincter for the treatment of incontinence.

In addition to these clinical activities Ian Finlay is a “leader” in British Surgery having served as an Executive Officer of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow and a Councillor of both the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland and the Association of Coloproctology of GB & Ireland. He is also a core member of the Bowel Cancer Advisory Group, a standing committee advising the Scottish Executive.

Ian Finlay is also an internationally recognised specialist in colorectal surgery as evidenced by the fact that he was one of only two colorectal surgeons in the United kingdom to be recommended in the “Tattler Guide to Surgeons in the UK” (2007) and is one of the few British clinicians to appear in a USA list of the “Worlds Best Doctors”.
