Professional profile

Mr Ian Pitman is a full time Consultant Spinal Surgeon at the prestigious Birmingham Spinal Centre at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham. Having originally trained in Orthopaedics Mr Pitman confines his practice now to 100% spinal problems and this reflects his NHS practice which is also 100% Spinal problems.

Mr Pitman is a recognised specialist in the management of low back and leg pain from degenerative disc disease. His main specialist interest is the degenerate or worn out disc resulting in back and or leg pain (sciatica). He is able to advise on both non-operative and operative management of spinal problems. He regularly undertakes microsurgical operative techniques on the spine to relieve the pressure caused by “slipped discs”.

Mr Pitman has undertaken a higher degree in Orthopaedic Bioengineering. He is also keenly involved in Education and lectures to other healthcare professionals on Spinal conditions. He also currently holds the post of Director of Education and Training at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.
