Professional profile

James is a Consultant Urological Surgeon who has been in post since 2007. He has a specialist interest in urological cancer and general urological problems. He qualified at Leeds University Medical School in 1994 and trained in urology in Yorkshire, primarily based at Royal Hallamshire Hospital. In 2006 he worked as the urological fellow at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, Brisbane, Australia.

James is actively involved in research into urological cancer. He obtained a PhD at Sheffield University investigating the cause of bladder cancer and now has a group of scientists continuing his work. His PhD was awarded the "Best Thesis in Europe" by the European Urology Association in 2005 and the "Bard Medal" by the British Association of Urological Surgeons.

In 2007 he was chosen for the prestigious American Urological Association exchange fellowship and visited hospitals in Baltimore, Chicago and San Francisco to broaden his expertise. Against competition from all medical schools and all medical specialties he was awarded a GSK clinical scientist fellowship in 2006 to continue his research. In 2010 he was awarded the Crystal Matula by the European Association of Urology. This is one of the highest honours of this society and goes to the most promising European Urologist.
