Professional profile

Mr John Watkinson qualified from the Royal Free Hospital, University of London and trained in ENT and Head and Neck and Plastic Surgery at Guys Hospital and the Royal Marsden.  He has Fellowships in both General Surgery and Otolaryngology, as well as an MSc in Nuclear Medicine and a MS in Surgery.  He is an elected member, by thesis, of the American Triological Society, as well as the American Head & Neck Society.  

Since 1992, he has been a consultant Head and Neck and Thyroid surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University of Birmingham NHS Trust.  He served on ARSAC (Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee) for the Government; 1994 – 2002.  

He currently has one of the largest thyroid practices in the UK and contributes to an active thyroid research programme. He has published on all aspects of Head and Neck surgery; organised the Birmingham Head and Neck course for ten years and is the Chief Editor of Stell and Maran, a textbook of Head and Neck Surgery and Oncology.  He edited the Plastic Surgery section of the last edition of Scott Brown, and is now the new Chief Editor. He was President of BAHNO (2009-2011) and is currently President of BAETS (2011-2013) and is the first ENT surgeon to hold that honour.  

He has been involved in a number of National guidelines including, Nice, BTA, BEHNO, DAHNO and ENT-UK and was awarded a Hunterian Professorship in 2009 from The Royal College of Surgeons of England.  He is a member of both the NCIN and NICR national committees.  In the past, he has given a number of eponymous lectures, which have included the Stell memorial lecture (2005), John Palmer in Toronto (2007), the Leegard lecture (2009), Hunterian (2009) and the Wilde Discourse (2011).    In 1994, together with the late Roy Castle and Peter Scudamore, he co-founded The Get A-Head Charitable Trust (www.getahead.org.uk).  

He is married with two children, enjoys travelling, watching all sports, fishing and fine wine.
