Professional profile

Mr Stock trained as a medical student at The Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine qualifying as a doctor in June 1990.  During that time he undertook a Bachelor of Science degree in clinical science at St. Mary’s Hospital Paddington, gaining a BSc (Clinical Science) in June 1998.

His basic surgical training was completed at The University College Hospital London and The Middlesex Hospital London.  Mr Stock gained the full Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in May 1994. He went on to join the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore training rotation before passing the specialist Orthopaedic examination, Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Trauma and Orthopaedics) in May 1999.

International experience was gained through completion of a fellowship in Arthroplasty and Sports Medicine at SPORTSMED.SA, Adelaide, South Australia in July 2000.  The fellowship involved the treatment of patients with hip and knee arthritis, with operations using a range of different implants to suit the patients' needs. Athletes from a diversity of sporting backgrounds were treated. Knee ligament and ‘cartilage’ injuries were particularly common and SPORTSMED had a national reputation for the treatment of these conditions.

Mr Stock returned to Stanmore to complete his orthopaedic training before joining Northampton General Hospital in 2001 as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.  His specialist interest is in lower limb surgery including sports injuries, hip and knee arthritis, primary and revision joint replacement of the hip and knee, knee ligament, meniscal and chondral injuries.  He looks after an ever increasing number of children/adolescents with sports and overuse injuries.

Mr Stock has been an Honorary Orthopaedic Surgeon at Northampton Saints Rugby Club since 2004.  As a keen sportsman he has played many sports and in 1988 represented England in the Rugby Students World Cup and played for Saracens Rugby Football Club. This sporting background has helped him develop a keen interest in sports medicine and surgery.

Mr Stock is the lead surgeon for the Elective Orthopaedic pathway at Northampton General Hospital. The pathway has been redesigned to give the best possible experience to patients undergoing surgery. The Patient Related Outcome Measures (PROMs) are amongst the highest in the country and can be looked at on the National Joint Registry (NJR)database.

As one of the lead orthopaedic surgeons based at the County Clinic, Northampton, Mr Stock’s consultations take place at either the County Clinic or BMI Three Shires Hospital.  This will be advised to you at the time of your appointment.  All surgery takes place at BMI Three Shires located a short distance from the County Clinic.  David works closely with local physiotherapists and allied health professionals to optimise each patients function and recovery.
