Clinical interests

Mr Mihai’s main expertise include minimally invasive thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery. He treats patients with isolated endocrine tumours or familial diseases, including children of such families. Patients with the following conditions can be assessed and offered appropriate treatment:

Thyroid surgery • Thyroid nodules • Goitre, including large retrosternal goitres • Graves disease (hyperthyroidism) • Thyroid cancer, including locally-advanced tumours that need radical lymph node dissections

Parathyroid surgery • Primary hyperparathyroidism – minimally invasive parathyroidectomy for patients with positive scans and bilateral neck explorations for those with negative scans • Familial hyperparathyroidism • Redo parathyroidectomy after failure of previous operations • Secondary hyperparathyroidism – surgical management of patients with overactive parathyroid glands due to long-standing renal failure

Adrenal surgery • Benign functional tumours (Cushing syndrome, phaeochromocytoma, hyperaldosteronism-Conn’s syndrome) are operated using laparoscopic techniques • Adrenal cancer - radical open adrenalectomy

In addition, Mr Mihai performs laparoscopic cholecystectomies (gallstones disease), laparoscopic repair of incisional hernias and open repair of groin hernias.

Professional profile

After graduating with MD from Carol Davilla University - Bucharest, Romania (1991), Mr Mihai trained for 3 years in clinical endocrinology before embarking on a PhD at Bristol University-UK (1995-1998). He completed his general surgical training working as a Lecturer in Surgery at Bristol University (1999-2005) and obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of London (FRCS) in 2005. He then undertook a 24-month fellowship in Endocrine Surgery in Oxford before being appointed as a Consultant Endocrine Surgeon at Oxford Radcliffe Trust in 2007.

Currently he is an elected member of the Executive Committee of the British Association of Endocrine Surgeons (BAETS) and European Society of Endocrine Surgeons (ESES). He acts as Surgical Specialty Lead for endocrine surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons.

Mr. Mihai is an examiner for the European Board in Endocrine Surgery and editor to the World Journal of Endocrine Surgery,

Mr Mihai’s reseach work on various topics in endocrine surgery led to the publication of over 50 peer-reviewed papers, 30 chapters in books, over 100 presentations to national and international meetings (details on www.radumihai.info) and has been rewarded by the Royal College of Surgeons with the title of Hunterian Professor of Surgery (2008).
