Professional profile

Mr Reed is a consultant in Clinical Oncology at the Beatson Oncology Centre, Glasgow, UK. He was appointed as a consultant to the Beatson Oncology Centre in September 1984 and was appointed as Clinical Director in April 1996 completing his term of office in June 2003.

Mr Reed was the  team leader for  Gynaecological, Thyroid and Neuroendocrine cancers within the BOC, from 2003-2008, and currently Lead Clinician for  West of Scotland Gynaecological Cancer Managed Clinical Network. His areas of special interest lie in the management of gynaecological cancers, the treatment of neuroendocrine cancers, including thyroid cancers, and he has an interest in the use of radionuclides for diagnosis and therapy of cancers. Recent interests include anaemia and cancer, the management of rare cancers, and Telemedicine to support Managed Clinical Networks to improve Scottish cancer outcomes.

Mr Reed has been an active member of the Scottish Gynaecological Cancer Trial Group and also the EORTC Gynaecological Cancer Group and from November 1997 till April 2003. He was Secretary of the EORTC GCG and subsequently Chairman from April 2003 until March 2009. He is a member of the NCRI Gynaecological Cancer Clinical studies Group, and a council member of the British Gynaecological Cancer Society from 1993-1995. Mr Reed ia also a member of the Gynaecological Cancer InterGroup (GCIG) and was Facilitator of the Rare Tumour Sub Group from 2000-2009. He has recently developed a website for rare cancers which has an educational role as well as a database. He is a member of council for the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) and was appointed a vice-President in 2009.

The gynaecological cancer team within the Beatson Oncology Centre has an active track record in the investigation and treatment of all gynaecological cancers and has both local and national studies co-ordinated by the Gynae Cancer team within the Beatson and the Clinical Trials Unit. Mr Reed has been an active contributor to many gynaecological cancer trials in the last 20 years and has been principal and chief investigator for both local and international studies.

Away from gynaecological cancers, my main interest and research lies with Thyroid and Neuroendocrine cancers and Mr Reed is a founder member and now secretary of the UKINET steering committee, and a member of the European society ENETS. In the past 5 years he has successfully been active in clinical trials in these areas and has been PI for a number of studies and also Chief investigator.
