Professional profile

Tatler"He has pioneered minimally invasive operations that do away with metalwork in the spine, in favour of cement injections. And his new techniques for operating on patients with scoliosis reduce hospital time and dramatically improve quality of life".

Mr Molloy is a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. He is unique in being the only person in the United Kingdom holding dual qualification as a Spinal Surgeon and a Chiropractor. He qualified as a Chiropractor in 1990. He practiced as a Chiropractor whilst training to be a Doctor. Mr Molloy graduated from St George’s Hospital Medical School in 1995. His specialist registrar years in Orthopaedics were spent on the South West Thames training rotation. Mr Molloy undertook an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering during his Orthopaedic registrar training and graduated in 2002 from Cardiff University.

Mr Molloy did a Fellowship year at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University Hospital in the United States. He then completed a further Fellowship in Spinal surgery at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, before being appointed as a Consultant in the same institution. He has been active in scientific research and his work is covered in over sixty published scientific papers/presentations both nationally and internationally.

Mr Molloy feels that his Chiropractic training complements his work as a Spinal Surgeon and enables him to give a comprehensive opinion on both the non operative and operative treatment of spinal pathologies.

As a Spinal Surgeon at Stanmore he performs the following procedures regularly: microdiscectomy for disc prolapse, spinal decompression for stenosis, spinal fusion (cervical and lumbar) for neurogenic pain, complex spinal trauma and tumour stabilisation, vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty for spinal tumour/osteoporotic fracture and fusion for scoliosis/kyphosis.

Mr Molloy consults at The Clementine Churchill Hospital on Thursdays. He is purely a spinal surgeon in the NHS and therefore wishes to confine himself to treating spinal problems in the private sector.
