Allergy is widespread in the UK and affects approximately one in four of the population. For most individuals the symptoms can cause inconvenience and in some cases a great deal of misery.
BMI The Clementine Churchill Hospital is offering a dedicated allergy service to help identify the extent and cause of allergic reactions in both adults and children.
What causes an allergy?
Allergic reactions are caused by substances in the environment known as allergens.
Examples of the most common allergens are: pollen, dust mites, moulds, pets such as cats and dogs, insects like wasps and bees, industrial and household chemicals, medicines, and foods such as milk and eggs. Less common allergens include nuts, fruit and latex.
Allergy causes the production of a special type of antibody as it views the allergen as damaging to the body. This leads other blood cells to release further chemicals (including histamine) which together cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
The most common symptoms are: sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes and ears, severe wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, sinus problems, a sore palate and nettle-like rash.
Diagnosis and treatment
Initial tests will be carried out by the nurse practitioner and the results will be analysed by one of our specialist consultants.
The consultants will then provide diagnosis and a personal treatment plan devised so that the allergy symptoms are managed whether it is for children who have serious allergies or those that they are likely to grow out of, and adults who acquire an allergy as they get older.
