Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust partners with BMI Healthcare on procurement
London NHS hospitals set to benefit from significant savings on the cost of medical consumables. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has selected BMI Healthcare to provide a new wholesaler and procurement service for the supply of general medical surgical consumables. The new framework agreement will be available for all London Trusts to access.
The new way of working will combine the purchasing scale of the NHS and BMI Healthcare, and leverage existing infrastructure and capabilities to secure significant savings by offering volume commitment to the supply base. It will improve efficiency and enable more effective aggregation of individual Trust spend to release funds for frontline care. The agreement has the potential to influence over £150m of London medical consumable spend.
“We think this is the most exciting response yet to the National Audit Report and Public Accounts Committee’s call for a culture of more efficient procurement in the NHS,” said Matt Oxley, Group Procurement & Property Director, BMI Healthcare. “We will combine our hospital and supply-chain experience, with those from participating Trusts, to establish a highly competitive Procurement Service. Put simply this marks the arrival of a new service for the NHS designed by healthcare professionals for healthcare professionals. “
“This agreement is an example of how the public and private sector can work in partnership to establish an innovative model for NHS Procurement,” said David Lawson, NHS lead, Director of Procurement, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. “It will meet the needs and priorities of London hospitals, and provide total transparency, and support to drive and co-ordinate product standardisation. Commitment contracting will guarantee the volumes to secure greater discounts from suppliers. For Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust this forms part of a wider strategy to transform the supply chain through automated stock management systems, just-in-time delivery, and consolidation of suppliers through prime wholesalers. “
