Pioneering Spinal Surgeon at BMI The Hampshire Clinic
19-SEP-08
Spinal orthopaedic surgeon Andrew Quaile from BMI The Hampshire Clinic has been shortlisted for a prestigious Independent Healthcare Award in recognition of his innovative work in minimally invasive spinal surgery.
Mr Quaile is one of approximately 55 full time spinal orthopaedic surgeons in the UK and, in 2007, was the first in the country to perform the Axialif lumbar fusion for lower back pain. Axialif is a minimally invasive procedure carried out by a small incision near the coccyx. It takes just 45 minutes and patients are usually walking with little pain within hours of surgery. Whilst both Axialif and conventional surgery bolt two vertebrae together, Axialif has fewer risks as it avoids the spinal canal, virtually eliminating the potential for nerve injury.
“The procedure has proved very beneficial to patients. It is much quicker than conventional surgery, which takes two and a half hours, and has a much faster recovery time. It also reduces muscle damage and the risk of serious bleeding.” said Mr. Quaile.
“I am delighted to be recognised by the Independent Healthcare Awards – it’s a huge tribute to my team at BMI The Hampshire Clinic and recognises the pioneering work and excellent standards we have here.”
The Independent Healthcare Awards on 16 September, 2008 in London, will be hosted by comedienne Jo Brand. In their third year, the awards have 13 categories recognising excellence and innovation. The Medical Practice award will be awarded to a person or team whose work has made a demonstrable contribution to improving patient treatment and care.
