A BSGE-accredited centre for the surgical treatment of endometriosis

The BSGE (The British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy) awards accreditation only to those centres that show the highest standards of minimal access surgery techniques in the treatment of gynaecological conditions.

This means we are practicing the best and latest techniques in the surgical treatment of endometriosis, in particular very advanced or severe endometriosis (sometimes referred to as stage four endometriosis).

When it comes to endometriosis, the BSGE accreditation also acknowledges that The Endometriosis Clinic hosts a multidisciplinary team, with consultants from different medical specialities available to support our patients throughout their treatment journey.

The BSGE recommends that severe endometriosis should only be treated in accredited endometriosis centres like ours.

An integrated approach for the best outcomes

We favour laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery wherever possible. Laparoscopic procedures are not only highly effective but also lead to a faster recovery. Our methods lead to long term relief from symptoms.

Our aim is to alleviate the need for long-term medication, whether hormonal drugs that manipulate your menstrual cycle, or major painkillers.

As well as gynaecologists, our team includes consultant surgeons from other specialties, including colorectal and general surgeons. We also have a specialist fertility clinic onsite. This means we are able to treat not only the endometriosis but also its symptoms and effects across the whole body.

With pain management and psychological experts also on hand, our holistic approach gives truly head-to-toe treatment for endometriosis.

And with all these specialists working onsite at The Priory Hospital, you get easy access and excellent continuity of care.

Healthcare built around you

At the Endometriosis Clinic, our focus is always on the patient as an individual. We bring the experience and the expertise, but we never forget that every person is different.

So, there is no one-size-fits-all treatment plan at our clinic. Every time we see a new patient, we build a bespoke treatment plan around their individual symptoms, circumstances and needs.

Every person we see at the Endometriosis Clinic will have an initial consultation, which we use to get to know you and your symptoms. For most people, this will also be the time to confirm a diagnosis of endometriosis.

We are keen to confirm an endometriosis diagnosis as quickly and efficiently as possible, and we do so using some or all of the following methods:

  • Physical examination (and taking your medical history)
  • Ultrasound scans
  • MRI scans
  • A laparoscopy (keyhole surgery to look inside your womb)

What are the symptoms of endometriosis?

Endometriosis causes a variety of symptoms and people experience the condition very differently. Common endometriosis symptoms include:

  • Painful periods that get worse over time
  • Chronic pain in your lower back and pelvis, which might radiate down your legs
  • Pain during or after sex
  • Pain in your intestines
  • Painful bowel movements or pain when you wee (especially during your period)
  • Stomach problems such as diarrhoea, constipation or bloating (especially during your period)
  • Heavy and/or long periods
  • Spotting or bleeding between periods
  • Infertility or subfertility
  • Fatigue

All these symptoms can point to other conditions, making endometriosis difficult to diagnose, and also leading to missed diagnosis for a lot of people. It's important to see a specialist if you think you might be suffering from endometriosis.

Lou Newman and her family
After a diagnosis of endometriosis, Louise Newman had come to terms with the possibility that she might not be able to conceive. However, after keyhole surgery at the Midlands Endometriosis Clinic, she has gone on to have a successful round of IVF and give birth to her daughter, Penelope.

"Before I had the procedure life was pretty miserable," says Louise. "I came off the pill as we wanted to try for a baby. However, I'd developed stage 4 endometriosis and was subsequently ill for 2-3 years. I was lucky that I only worked part time so the time I had off because of my illness was minimal. I was told I either needed surgery or I had to go back on the pill but I so desperately wanted a baby."

Louise had surgery at her local NHS hospital to begin with and some of the cysts and damaging tissue was removed however she later discovered that a lot of tissue had grown and attached itself to her bowel.

It was then that Louise approached a specialist practicing out of the BMI Priory Hospital in Birmingham - consultant gynaecologist Mr Christopher Mann.

Mr Mann advised Louise that she would require further surgery, she said: "I was apprehensive of course, but I just so badly wanted it to work so I could have a baby. I knew we'd have to have IVF but my body needed to prepare itself for the treatment. Without the surgery with Mr Mann I wouldn't have been able to have IVF. Until he was in theatre he didn't know whether I would just get away with keyhole surgery, so I was hoping this would be the case to reduce my recovery time and I'm pleased to say he did succeed with just keyhole so I was able to heal and recover far more quickly."

Shortly after the successful procedure, Louise began IVF treatment and gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Penelope and her and her partner are now looking to add another addition to their family:

"My life has changed simply because I now have all I ever wanted, a baby. There was a time when I didn't think it would ever happen. That my body would never be able to conceive a child, but now I'm so happy and feel very grateful that I have my precious baby girl and I'm hoping to also have another child in the near future to give her a baby brother or sister."
