Bowel cancer affects 1 in 14 men and 1 in 19 women in their lifetime.
It is the 4th most common cancer in the UK, but the 2nd biggest killer so it is important to know the signs and symptoms to ensure that crucial early diagnosis.
Bowel cancer screening
Did you know you are entitled to a free bowel scope screen on the NHS at aged 55? And between the ages of 60 and 74 (50 and 74 in Scotland) you will be entitled to a bowel cancer stool test every 2 years, an easy and non-invasive test that can be done at home. So don't put it off.
If you don't fall into the NHS screening age category but would like a bowel cancer screen, or if you would like a more regular check, BMI Healthcare provide a full bowel cancer screening service led by specialist consultants.
My message is very simple - When the bowel screening kit is delivered to you, USE IT and send it back. I did and was proclaimed positive. They found it and excised it - I had no chemo or anything post-operative.
My thanks to James McCourtney MD FRCS and team at the Scottish Colorectal Unit at BMI Ross Hall Hospital in Glasgow. Keep up the good work.
