Vivianne's story

I've been married to Jeff for 23 years and we have 2 sons, Sam and Matthew aged 23 and 22.

Having spent 30 years as a police officer, I am now a receptionist at BMI The Woodlands Hospital in Darlington. I have been on the bowel cancer journey for the last 5 years.

In 2009 I had a polyp removed from my colon and began a precautionary 3 yearly colonoscopy screening programme.

In March 2012, I noticed blood in my faeces but was diagnosed with haemorrhoids by my local GP. There was no improvement and by the time I had my triennial colonoscopy in October 2012 a stage 3c malignant tumour was discovered in my colon. I had key-hole surgery a month later to remove part of my colon before beginning a 6 month course of chemotherapy in December 2012.

I am a keen runner so tried to remain as active as I could during my treatment and 4 months later, after being given the all clear, was able to run the Yorkshire marathon.

In 2014 I had minor surgery to repair an anal fistula however unfortunately the biopsy discovered another malignant tumour.

In May 2014 my entire colon, rectum and anus was removed and a permanent stoma was fitted which involves wearing a pouch attached to my belly for the collection of waste products.

Chemotherapy was not necessary the second time around and 3 months after my major surgery I ran my personal best time of 52 minutes and 53 seconds in the Darlington 10k run.

I went onto run the Rome Marathon in March 2015 and achieved my personal best time of 4 hours and 9 minutes.

I currently have six monthly appointments with my consultant colorectal surgeon and I am thrilled to say, to date, all tests and indications are very positive.

As well as my passion for running, I like to remain fit and make the most of the great outdoors by taking regular walks. I also thoroughly enjoy foreign travel and reading.

I am very excited to be running my first London Marathon on 23rd April. I was likely enough to get a charity place with Beating Bowel Cancer so I will be running the 26.2 miles on their behalf, aiming to raise as much money as I can to support the fantastic campaigning work they do.
