Personal Profile

Mr Eddie Chaloner is a consultant vascular surgeon, specialising in minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins, sclerotherapy for thread veins and other aspects of venous and arterial disease including deep vein thrombosis, deep vein insufficiency, venous ulceration and peripheral arterial disease.

Mr Chaloner was awarded a BA in Physiological Science from Oxford University in 1986 and graduated in Medicine after clinical training at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford in 1989. After house jobs in Oxford he trained in surgery in London and South Africa.

During and after his formal surgical training, Mr Chaloner worked extensively as a volunteer in the overseas humanitarian sector with Medecins sans Frontieres and the HALO Trust (landmine clearance). He was a British army reservist for 12 years. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1994, passed the intercollegiate examination in surgery in 2000 and was entered onto the Specialist Register following award of the CCST in 2001.

Mr Chaloner was appointed as an NHS Consultant Vascular Surgeon at University College Hospitals London in 2001, and Lewisham University Hospital in 2005. More recently, Mr Chaloner was lead clinician for the Medical workforce at the NHS London Nightingale Hospital during the COVID-19 crisis in March – May 2020.

Mr Chaloner has a particular interest in minimally invasive varicose veins treatment. He was the first surgeon in London to use endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) in 2002, which revolutionised vein treatment by successfully curing varicose veins with a 30-minute operation done entirely under local anaesthetic, without any major skin incisions.

At the time, EVLT was a brand - new technique for treating varicose veins, but has subsequently been proven to be the gold standard for vein surgery and was confirmed as the first line treatment of choice for varicose veins by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence in 2013.

EVLT and other similar thermal ablation techniques have now almost completely replaced the open surgical ‘high tie and strip’ procedures for varicose vein treatment in the UK, USA and Europe and vastly improved both surgical practice and the patient experience for this common disorder which affects 30% of the population at some time in their lives.

Mr Chaloner has been at the forefront of this developing field in varicose vein surgery for almost 20 years as an innovator, educator and researcher, with multiple peer reviewed publications and other contributions to the surgical literature.

He was a founding faculty member of the Minimally invasive veins workshop at the annual international Charing Cross vascular symposium and the first surgeon in the UK to use the Clarivein chemical / mechanical ablation technique in 2010. He is frequently invited to speak at national and international venous meetings and regularly runs training courses for other surgeons in minimally invasive vein treatment.

According to data from the Private Health Information Network, Mr Chaloner personally treats approximately 900 veins patients per year – more than any other surgeon in the UK.

Mr Chaloner has worked very closely for over 20 years with his colleague, Mr Aaron Sweeney. Together they run Radiance vein clinic, the leading vein surgery practice in London and the South East of England, providing walk in – walk out treatment for varicose veins and thread veins under local anaesthetic.

As the NHS has largely withdrawn from the provision of varicose vein treatment, Mr Chaloner and Mr Sweeney now practice completely in the private medical sector. Clinic appointments are available every day of the week at our locations in Harley Street, The Sloane Hospital, Beckenham, The Blackheath Hospital, Chelsfield Park and Benenden Hospital in Kent. Online video consultations are also available.
