Personal Profile

Miss Iman Azmy has been a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at Chesterfield Royal Hospital since 2005. Her undergraduate training was in Glasgow University, from which she graduated 1991. Her initial surgical training was at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, followed by appointment to the North Trent Higher Surgical Rotation in 1997.

During her higher surgical training she opted to undertake 3 years in full-time research at the University of Sheffield investigating possible links between markers in inflammatory genes and breast cancer. This work culminated in being awarded a research grant by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and winning the East midlands  Surgical Society Prize.  Miss Azmy gained the higher degree of  MD in 2004 for this project.

She was one of the first candidates in the UK to be selected for a national oncoplastic fellowship. This encompassed intensive cross-specialty training post in plastic, oncological/reconstructive surgery, as part of a major new collaboration involving the Department of Health, the British Association of Plastic Surgeons and the BASO Breast Surgery Group. This experience has allowed her to develop a new reconstructive breast service at Chesterfield Royal Hospital providing a wide range and diversity of reconstructive and corrective options, which are increasingly sought by patients in this rapidly evolving field.

Miss Azmy is dedicated to training junior breast surgeons in oncoplastic techniques and has also repeatedly given talks and seminars to educate and inform patients on issues related to breast cancer, breast awareness and breast reconstruction. She continue to participate in research projects and publication of the results in the medical literature (>30 publications to date).
