Mr Chakrabarti qualified from the University of Nottingham Medical School. He went on to complete his training in Edinburgh (where he obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, gaining a great deal of experience in a variety of surgical specialties) and then Newcastle Upon Tyne where he completed his orthopaedic training before returning to Nottingham to undertake a Fellowship in Hand and Wrist surgery.
During the course of his postgraduate surgical training, he worked in numerous hospitals around the UK and obtained experience in many different regions, treating patients in a wide variety of socio-economic groups. As a result, he gained a depth and breadth of knowledge that is hard to come by.
He has a great deal of experience in treating hand and wrist disorders, with a particular expertise in joint replacement in the hand and wrist as well as minimally invasive surgery.
He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon, specialising in Hand and Wrist Surgery, at Rotherham General Hospital in 1997; he worked there for 22 years before retiring from full-time NHS practice. During that time, he developed a regional hand and wrist surgery service that is now recognised for the purposes of training orthopaedic surgeons in this specialty. He is proud to have trained numerous surgeons whom he can now refer to as his colleagues.
He has published numerous research papers in peer-reviewed hand surgery journals and has a keen interest in education and training.
Throughout his career he has undertaken audit of his work and obtained feedback from patients and colleagues alike as part of the process of regular appraisal and revalidation in accordance with the requirements of the General Medical Council. He is on the Specialist Register.
Mr Chakrabarti is a senior examiner for the Intercollegiate Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons — in Trauma and Orthopaedics— and for the Diploma in Hand Surgery administered by the British Society for Surgery of the Hand, of which he is a Fellow. These roles include membership of the Board of Examiners of the former and the Examination Committee of the latter. In addition, he examines for the Joint Surgical Fellowship (in Hong Kong and Singapore) as well as the Joint Surgical Colleges Fellowship Examination (at various locations worldwide) in Trauma and Orthopaedics.
His particular interest in this regard is maintaining the standards of assessment by means of quality-assurance in accordance with the principles of medical education and training. This requires a great deal of work (for example, question-writing and clinical examinations) in conjunction with educational experts at the various royal colleges and universities that are involved. Membership of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers reflects his commitment this cause.
Mr Chakrabarti maintains Continuing Professional Development and Continuing Medical Education. As an advocate of equality and diversity in the workplace he regularly teaches prospective trainers on the subject, particularly in relation to the Fellowship Exam in Trauma and Orthopaedics.
He currently works exclusively at Thornbury Hospital, Sheffield, where his practice comprises about 70% National Health Service work with the remaining 30% being in the private sector.
