Personal Profile

Mr Jonathan Blanshard qualified from the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, part of the university of London in 1984. Surgical training for ENT included a time in Plastic Surgery, Orthopaedics and Accident & Emergency. His higher surgical training was in Bristol and the South West where he benefited from the great expertise in the different branches of ENT. Mr Blanshard had a years Fellowship in Brisbane and a shorter spell in Copenhagen where he gained subspecialty skills.

Mr Blanshard’s primary subspecialisation is in ear surgery which encompasses the middle ear and mastoid in both adults and children. Specifically he has developed a technique for repair of “anterior” perforations of the ear drum and revision mastoid surgery. There are situations where the hearing is impaired due to problems in the ossicular chain and Mr Blanshard carries out ossiculoplasty or stapedectomy to improve the hearing by repairing the ossicular chain.

Ear problems are common in children. Many conditions are managed medically but  occasionally surgery is necessary which ranges from simple insertion of grommet to repair of a perforated tympanic membrane and occasionally surgery for cholesteatoma.

He also holds a Voice Clinic with a Speech Therapist which allows a fuller assessment of the vocal fold function and to determine the appropriate treatment. This may include microlaryngoscopy and phonosurgery to remove lesions from the vocal cord. Occasionally thyroplasty may help restore voice in the presence of a vocal cord palsy.
