Mr Ali has received several excellence awards in recognition of his achievements in his field of surgery. He takes a significant interest in research into bariatric surgery and has led many publications and international collaborations. He participates regularly in international conferences as the invited speaker and to perform live surgery. Mr Ali is a recognised examiner in the field of surgery, both in the UK and Abroad.
He is an Honorary Professor at the School of Health and Science at the University of West of Scotland, supervising Master and PhD degree students. He is a manager and representative of the Scottish bariatric surgeons in the SCOTS study, researching the long-term effects of bariatric surgery. He appeared in two Nationwide documentary programmes about obesity, prevention and treatment in 2012 - “Scotland the Fat” and in 2018, “Shedding the Fat." He has also appeared in other medical programmes on TV, Radio and Newspapers, and on BBC News as an expert in the field of Bariatric Surgery and surgical treatment of Type II Diabetes. Additionally, he was filmed by the BBC and other international media whilst performing live surgery. The success of the Bariatric service Mr Ali founded and led attracted leading News channels to interview him. He was also interviewed and filmed by TV channels in other countries performing live operations for other general laparoscopic surgeries.
Mr Ali regularly performs sleeve gastrectomy, one anastomosis gastric bypass, Roux-en-y gastric bypass, and revisional bariatric procedures of varying types. He is an experienced laparoscopic and endoscopic surgeon who performs a wide range of general surgeries including the treatment of Gall Bladder disease, Hernias and Anti- reflux & hiatus hernia surgeries, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies.
