Background

Mr Nachiketa Acharya is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Medical Retina Specialist whose NHS practice is based at The Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. His areas of expertise include medical retina disease (age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion and inherited retinal disorders), cataract surgery, and general ophthalmology. He completed his ophthalmic specialist training in Birmingham and undertook Fellowships in Medical Retina at Aberdeen and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.

He has an MD in Ophthalmology from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and he is a Member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists as well as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. He has worked as a Medical Retina Consultant at the Birmingham & Midlands Eye Centre before being appointed to Sheffield in 2008. 

Special Interests

He is a very experienced cataract surgeon offering small incision Phaco surgery. He offers premium IOLs including Toric and Multifocal lenses to optimise the post-operative vision correction and dependence on glasses. He has special interest in Medical Retina, offering his years of expertise in dealing with Retinal disorders such as Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinal Vein Occlusions, Retinal Dystrophy’s including Retinitis Pigmentosa. He also deals with routine General Ophthalmology conditions such as Dry eyes, Blepharitis and Glaucoma.

Teaching and Training

He is currently an Educational Supervisor to junior ophthalmologists training in the Yorkshire and Humberside Deanery and also conducts Masterclasses in Ophthalmology at the University of Sheffield Medical School. He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sheffield.

Research and Publications

Mr Nachiketa Acharya has published his research in retinal vein occlusion and socio-economics of age related macular degeneration in peer reviewed journals and is currently a co-investigator in numerous clinical trials for retinal disease.
