Personal Profile

Mr Robert Clayton, having studied medicine in Edinburgh as an undergraduate, qualified in 2000 and remained in Edinburgh for his basic and higher specialist surgical training. He undertook a specialist training fellowship in complex surgery of the foot & ankle in Glasgow in 2009, followed by a lower limb reconstruction fellowship in Toronto.

Mr Clayton has undertaken further specialist training in ankle replacement and forefoot deformity correction surgery with leading European Foot & Ankle Specialists in cities including Zurich, Bordeaux, Barcelona, Paris and Padua. Mr Clayton took up post as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in February 2010 with a major subspecialty interest in foot & ankle surgery and has since become one of Scotland’s leading foot and ankle specialists.

Mr Clayton has taken a leading role in developing foot & ankle surgical services in Scotland and has organised and taught on specialist aspects of foot & ankle surgery for trainee surgeons and other health professionals. He is a prominent member of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society; he has served on its Scientific Committee and is currently a Director of the society and a member of council. Mr Clayton leads national development of face to face and web-based teaching and training in all aspects of foot and ankle surgery. Mr Clayton speaks regularly at national and international meetings, and has been invited as a guest speaker at the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and the European Foot and Ankle Society.

Mr Clayton performs the full range of foot & ankle surgery. He uses the latest contemporary techniques to accelerate recovery and minimise immobilisation. Mr Clayton was the first surgeon in Scotland to use the Cartiva implant to preserve motion in patients with arthritis in the great toe.

  • Hallux valgus (bunion) correction including scarf osteotomy to allow rapid post-operative mobilisation without needing plaster casts
  • Ankle ligament reconstruction for treatment of ankle instability, including use of the Internal Brace to accelerate rehabilitation
  • Forefoot deformity correction including minimally invasive surgery
  • Ankle replacement
  • Arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery including treatment of sports injuries
  • Heel pain including achilles tendinopathy (tendinitis) and plantar fasciitis
  • Hindfoot deformity correction
  • Arthritis surgery in the foot including hallux rigidus (arthritis of the great toe) and arthritis in all other joints of the foot and ankle
