Professional Profile

Mr Abeed Chowdhury is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. His undergraduate medical training was completed at the University of Manchester Medical School with higher surgical training in Nottingham. He was awarded national research fellowships by the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the National Institute of Health Research for work in surgical immunology and was awarded a PhD in 2013 by the University of Nottingham. His research has been extensively published and is highly cited by peers in his field.

He has undertaken a post certification colorectal fellowship at St James’s Hospital in Leeds with Professor Sagar in advanced and recurrent colorectal cancer. His specialist area is rectal cancer surgery and is one of a very few surgeons nationally who has expertise in the management of early, intermediate and advanced rectal cancer. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive techniques for rectal cancer including laparoscopy, robotic surgery as well as rectal preservation techniques such as the transanal endoscopic operation. This work includes the management of suspicious colorectal polyps and early rectal cancer.

He is one of two members of the advanced colorectal cancer surgical team of colorectal surgeons undertaking the management of complex tertiary colorectal cancer referrals from across the East Midlands as well as from outside the region.

In addition, he has an interest in benign conditions of the anal canal including specialist techniques for the management of haemorrhoids, perianal fistulas and pilonidal disease.

He is actively involved in surgical training and has been responsible in establishing educational programme's for surgical trainees and nursing specialists.

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has one of the largest colorectal units in the county and Abeed is currently lead clinician for colorectal cancer and deputy head of service with responsibility for cancer diagnosis and treatment pathways and lead clinician for emergency colorectal governance with responsibility for safety and quality.
