Dr McDonald graduated from the University of Glasgow Medical School in 1986 and he undertook specialist oncology training in Glasgow and on Merseyside.
He has more than 10 years experience at consultant level, based in the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. His specialist clinical practice deals exclusively with gastro-intestinal malignancies (colorectal, oesophageal, gastric, pancreatic and anal cancers).
Special interests include the use of adjuvant (post-operative) and neo-adjuvant (pre-operative) therapies, the incorporation of new drugs into clinical practice, the use of combinations of radiation & chemotherapy and the treatment of metastatic disease.
He is actively involved in research in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers and is a co-investigator of a number of ongoing GI clinical trials. His research has included examination of mechanisms of chemotherapy drug resistance, clinical studies evaluating new drugs and novel methods to improve the management of rectal cancer. He is a member of the NCRI sub-groups for the treatment of both rectal and anal cancers.
