He qualified from St George’s Hospital Medical School in London. Having worked in London and Manchester as a junior hospital doctor, he trained in Orthopaedic Surgery in Wales and Oswestry. He underwent advanced surgical training in Foot and Ankle surgery before becoming a Consultant in January 2008. His NHS practice is at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Trafford General Hospitals.
Amer is involved in training junior doctors, and is regularly invited to speak at national and international meetings to share his experiences. He also teaches on postgraduate courses.
Amer also treats complicated limb injuries and deformities with circular frame external fixators. He has extensive experience in this, especially in dealing with complex injuries from several conflicts. He served with the Royal Army Medical Corps in Bosnia, as well as providing humanitarian support in Haiti after the earthquake and in Syria, treating civilians caught up in the terrible civil war.
Amer runs a charity called Orthocycle. This charity runs courses in the UK to train doctors in foot and ankle surgery, and also recycles medical equipment for use in less developed countries.
