Mr Andre Jackowski is a highly respected Consultant Spinal Surgeon at the Birmingham Spinal Centre of The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham. A past Clinical Director of Spine Surgery at the prestigious Birmingham Spinal Centre of The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham he is the lead spine surgeon at the private Birmingham Spinal Clinic based at the BMI Priory Hospital. He has been a Consultant Neurosurgeon in Birmingham since 1991. A recognised expert in spine surgery he was cited in 2011 in the Times Magazine’s prestigious Britain’s Top 50 Surgeons guide.
He qualified BSc (First class Honours) and MB BS from University College Hospital in London in 1980. He completed his neurosurgical training at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queens Square London and Charing Cross Hospital London. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1985 and completed a higher degree, a Doctorate in Medicine (MD) at University of London, in 1990. During his training at U.C.L he received The Faculty of Medical Sciences Silver Medal awarded annually for the highest marks achieved across all the medical and medical science degrees. He was also awarded a Medical Research Council Training Fellowship for his thesis research.
He has a long list of scientific publications and invited guest lectures behind him and is a Past President of the British Cervical Spine Society. He is a founding Trustee and current serving Officer of the European Cervical Spine Research Society. Past and present memberships include The Society of British Neurological Surgeons, The British Scoliosis Society, British Cervical Spine Society, British Association of Spinal Surgeons, British Association of Clinical Anatomists, European Skull Base Society, International Society of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism and The Brain Research Society.
Actively involved in spinal teaching, he has supervised numerous higher degrees and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at The University of Birmingham. Positions of responsibility held have included Royal College Regional Specialty Representative, Royal College Training Program Director, Chairman of Regional Training Program Committee, Program Committee BritSpine and Program Committee European Cervical Spine Society. He is on the editorial advisory boards of the British Journal of Neurosurgery and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
He lectures nationally and internationally on a regular basis and is a world expert on disc replacement and minimally invasive therapies.
He has developed and pioneered numerous spinal implants most notably that of cervical disc replacement and has been instrumental in introducing innovative and minimally invasive techniques in spinal surgery.
Mr Jackowski has a wide experience in the surgical management of all conditions of the cervical thoracic and lumbar spine including disc arthroplasty as well as adult deformity. His specialist interests include spinal tumours and trauma as well as the full spectrum degenerative spinal conditions.
