Mr Port is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip and knee surgey. He has over 30 years experience in orthopaedic surgery 22 of which as a consultant delivering care at the Woodlands hospital.

During this time he  has led and guided local, regional, and national directives in improving the quality of  orthopaedic surgery.

Mr Port is currently Chair of the surgical collaborative at South Tees incorporating the James Cook University and the Friarage hospital. He leads on the strategy to standardise the delivery and quality of the provision of surgery over the Tees Valley and North Yorkshire. He has previouslyheld the position of Chief of service of the orthopaedic department in James Cook and the Friarage and Director of the James Cook Major Trauma Service for 12 years.

He has held a number of national positions including the British Orthopaedic Association Professional Practice Committee, setting standards for surgical care and outcomes. He examines both nationally and internationally for the Royal College of Surgeons and leads the examination teams in the Hong Kong and Singapore. He is now is an examiner assessor and is a panel member for the Royal College of Surgeons Invited Review Mechanism which reviews individual surgeon performance and the delivery of surgical care by trusts and systems. He therefore not only assures standards of surgeon training but also assesses the quality of surgical care delivery throughout the country and the quality of surgical training assessors. He also authored the 2018 Parliamentary Review in the delivery of Orthopaedic care. This places him in a unique position to compare and deliver the best quality surgical care himself.

With over 500 cases performed per year  over a 30 year period he has some of the most extensive experience in arthroplasty nationally. His National Joint registry outcomes demonstrate some of the best patient reported outcomes in the country, which places him in the top 0.3% of surgeons for performance and outcome nationally.
He has extensive experience in Enhanced recovery and pioneered computer assisted surgery regionally.  Latterly he developed Robotic assisted knee and hip replacements having carried out over 200 such proceedures, access to which is unique in this locality to the Woodlands hospital. No other private hospital in the region currently offers augmented surgical assistance with the Stryker Mako Robotics system

He offers the option of Partial knee replacement which is appropriate in certain cases ( approximately 10-20% of knee replacements ) and usually result in a better functional outcome and a more rapid recovery.

He is a regional specialist in complex primary and revision surgery and set up the region wide standardisation of care in revision joint replacement. This places him in a unique position to know what can go wrong in joint replacemnt surgery which has allowed him to develop his surgical technique to minimise such errors himself.

The  British Orthopaedic Association along with the Department of Health directive  Getting It Right First Time  (GIRFT) advocate minimal numbers for each of these procedures ( revision joints and partial knees ) of no less than 15 per year.

Surgeons should not be performing less than 15 per year. Mr Port performs over 50 revisions and 40 partial knee replacements per year and is one of the most experienced in this complex surgery in the region.
