Personal profile

Following his qualification from Manchester University in 1982, Tony Clayson undertook his orthopaedic training in London before returning to the North West of England. He completed a Specialist Fellowship in Lower Limb Joint Replacement Surgery at Wrightington Hospital & visited Centres in Bern, Pittsburgh & Toronto to further develop his interest & expertise in the management of complex hip, pelvic & lower limb disorders.

Tony established the North West Pelvic, Acetabular & Young Adult Hip service at North Manchester General Hospital in 1994 & is a nationally recognised expert in the management of complex problems of the hip joint  & pelvic bones. His expertise lies in the field of joint replacement surgery of the hip & knee, together with the assessment & management of young adult hip pain, treating patients with hip dysplasia (underdeveloped hip socket) & hip impingement. This includes performing specialised procedures to realign the bones around the hip (osteotomy) as an alternative to joint replacement in younger patients.  He is one of only a few surgeons in the UK who regularly perform the Ganz Periacetabular Osteotomy, in  addition to performing surgical fixations of complex pelvis & hip socket fractures treating patients from throughout the North of England & North Wales.

His other main area of clinical interest relates to sports injuries including arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery & ligament reconstruction of the knee & ankle.  He is an avid proponent of an accelerated rehabilitation programme following cruciate ligament reconstructive surgery of the knee, thereby facilitating his patients return to full sporting activities. For many years he has provided orthopaedic advice & support to several high profile professional sports clubs, semi-professional clubs & amateur sportspeople.

His extensive clinical experience has enabled him to be actively involved in clinical governance, a vital part of modern surgical practice, comprising quality assurance processes & the maintenance of high standards in clinical practice.  This experience alongside his clinical expertise, means his patients always benefit from being treated by a clinician who is fully conversant with new developments & aware of all the various factors that are important in ensuring a high quality of clinical care is received. Tony always strives to fully understand his patient’s & ensures that they receive the highest standard of treatment & care, in a relaxed environment.
