Mr Anthony Hearnden
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
MBBS, BSc, FRCS (Tr&Orth)
Practices at: BMI Mount Alvernia Hospital
Mr Hearnden works with physiotherapists and hand therapists to provide a range of treatments for hand and wrist arthritis. The areas of the hand most commonly affected are: the base of the thumb; the finger joints; and the joint in the wrist that allows rotation of the forearm, known as the distal radio-ulna joint (DRUJ). Initial treatments can include splints, painkillers, anti-inflammatory medication, cortisone injections and exercises.
Mr Hearnden provides a tertiary referral service for many upper limb problems, in particular complex elbow surgery. He is regularly referred these difficult cases from other upper limb surgeons in the south of England.
Training and Appointment
Mr Hearnden qualified from King's College Medical School, London, in 1995. Completing his years as a junior doctor at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, he then spent a year learning techniques in plastic surgery. His orthopaedic training was in south west London, before winning a prestigious hand and shoulder surgery fellowship at the Wrightington Upper Limb Unit, Manchester.
In 2007 he was made a consultant at Wrightington, where he routinely treated complex and tertiary hand, elbow and upper limb disorders from the north west of England. He returned to Guildford in 2010 to take up a consultant post at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.
In addition to his surgical qualifications, Anthony holds an undergraduate degree in medical physics and is an honorary senior lecturer in orthopaedic management at Salford University. He is widely published in the medical journals and lectures nationally and internationally on upper limb surgery.
Mr Hearnden is currently researching elbow arthroplasty for complex fractures for previously failed replacements. He is also a member of Ascension orthopaedics product development team for new joint replacement prostheses in the hand and wrist.
Anthony is a founder member of One Orthopaedics. One Orthopaedics is a group of orthopaedic consultants who have come together with the aim of being a one-stop destination for the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of conditions or injuries to the musculoskeletal system.
