Mr Miles is a Consultant Emergency and Colorectal Surgeon working at Brighton and Sussex University Hospital. He trained in Edinburgh where he presented his MD thesis on the detection of colorectal cancer during and after surgery. His final specialist training in colon cancer surgery and colonoscopy was at St George's Hospital Medical School in London.
His specialist interest is in the treatment of all aspects of colon and rectal cancer, including laparoscopic treatment and trans-anal treatment.
Mr Miles is a trainer for trans-anal treatment of rectal cancer in the UK, Europe and the USA. His training centre, based in Amersfoort Holland, has currently trained 260 surgeons from Europe and around the world. He has a special interest in taTME for low rectal cancer and TAMIS for early rectal cancer and polyps.
Mr Miles is a screening colonoscopist, the highest UK qualification in colonoscopy, and is able to undertake all colonoscopic treatment of polyps and early cancers. Mr Miles is also a leading expert in surgery for hernia and gallstones specialising in day case treatment. Mr Miles has previously worked as director of surgery at the award winning Western Sussex NHS Trust and currently holds a contract with Brighton and Sussex University Hospital.
Mr Miles holds the NHS Nye Bevan Certificate of Executive Leadership and has worked on the Board of Directors of Western Sussex NHS Trust. Mr Miles has been a member of the Examination Board of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a trainer for Surgical Skills training in the Edinburgh College and Adult Trauma Life Support for emergency surgery. He is a colonoscopy and colorectal cancer trainer in the UK and Europe.
