Personal Profile

Mr Sharma qualified from St. Thomas’ Hospital, University of London and trained as a physician and ophthalmologist. He received higher specialist training in Birmingham, St. Thomas’ Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. After spending 2 years in a surgical retinal fellowship and 1 year in medical retina he has been working as a consultant at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre and Sandwell General Hospital for the last 2 years.

His special interests include diseases of the retina and vitreous, diabetic eye disease, retinal detachments and macular disorders (wet AMD, puckers and macular holes). He receives referrals for complex cataracts, ocular trauma and lens implant problems (decentred/dislocated implants) as well as more routine cataract and eyelid problems.

He is actively involved in developing new approaches to complex ophthalmic problems and has published widely on these in peer-reviewed journals. He is involved in teaching and gives lectures around the country and runs the Birmingham Ocular Trauma Course.
