Dr Manivannan did his undergraduate training at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Colombo and his specialist medical training in the Postgraduate Medical deaneries of the Universities of London, Oxford and Leicester. He received many distinctions and prizes at school and university. He was awarded the only Distinction in Medicine in his graduating class. He was also conferred the Gold Medal in Medicine and the Gold Medal in Clinical Medicine at the final MBBS examination in 1995.
Dr Manivannan obtained the MRCP(UK) by examination in 2000 and was conferred the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP) in 2009. He was appointed as examiner for the MRCP clinical examination in 2010 by the Royal College of Physicians of London and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
He was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in General Internal Medicine and the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in Geriatric Medicine by the Specialist Training Authority and Academy of Medical Royal Colleges of the United Kingdom in 2005.
He is on the General Medical Council (UK) specialist register as well as the general practice register. He holds a substantive consultant physician appointment in the National Health Service.
Dr Manivannan has a special interest and expertise in the diagnosis and management of Osteoporosis and related bone health problems. He was instrumental in establishing the Fracture Liaison and Osteoporosis service at his NHS hospital. He continues to run this service and also runs the London Osteoporosis and Bone Health practice in the independent sector.
Dr Manivannan conducts regular teaching sessions for undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors. He has been rated by many cohorts of students (in independently collated feedback) as an outstanding clinical teacher. He holds honorary academic appointments as Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Oxford and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Leicester.
