Dr Barbara McGowan read Biochemistry at Hertford College, Oxford University in 1984-1988.

She worked as a Pharmaceutical Equity analyst in the City for five years and subsequently studied Medicine at the Royal Free Hospital in London, graduating in 1998 with Merits.

She was awarded a PhD from Imperial College London in 2007 investigating the role of gut hormones and other neuropeptides in appetite control. Dr McGowan was appointed as a Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College in 2007 and as a Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust in 2009.

Her specialist areas are in general endocrinology (including thyroid disease, polycystic ovaries, hypogonadism, adrenal disease, metabolic disorders, hormone imbalance) and diabetes. Her specialty interests include pituitary and neuroendocrine tumours including hereditary endocrine disorders. She is also interested in managing complex obesity and co-morbidities associated with obesity including type 2 diabetes and the metabolic syndrome.

She leads the obesity bariatric service at Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital. She is also a general medicine physician. Her main areas of research interest are in obesity and appetite control. Dr McGowan has published extensively in peer-reviewed medical journals.
