Personal Profile

Please note: initial appointments with Mr Badrakumar are telephone only.

Before joining the South Tees Hospitals, Mr Badrakumar was a Consultant Urologist in Scotland. He had also held an Educational Advisor position for SAS doctors with NHS Education for Scotland. He worked for more than three years in Blackpool Victoria Hospital, where he developed a stone service for the region.

Mr Badrakumar set up a Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy service for the Fylde coast region. He was involved in the development of the electronic stent register, cancer pathways for fast-track investigation, pathways for urgent suspected urological cancer referral that complies with current NICE guidelines, the e-discharge platform and MDT workflow reconfiguration.

He is an educational supervisor for junior and middle-grade urology trainees. He introduced Memokath Ureteric Stent insertion for patients who are dependent on long-term stents to maintain their renal function. This has eliminated or reduced the need for regular stent change.

Mr Badrakumar has contributed significantly to research. He was the principal investigator for the SUSPEND Trial (medical expulsive therapy in adults with ureteric colic: a multi-centre, randomised, placebo-controlled trial) UK National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment Programme. He set up recruitment for PUrE-RCT (the Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy, Flexible Ureterorenoscopy and Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy for lower pole kidney stones randomised controlled trial) as principal investigator. He was the founding member and developer of the online Urology discussion forum called 'Uroeducation'. He also participates in the Urolink project (BAUS funded) to develop a Urology service in the remote parts of Ethiopia.
