Personal Profile

Mr Gnanachandran jointly leads the endometriosis centre at Northampton General Hospital, providing women who suffer with severe and complex endometriosis with access to expert treatment and specialist surgeons. Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, he is committed to delivering exceptional, evidence-based care to women across Northamptonshire.

Mr Gnanachandran is an expert in gynaecology scanning, laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgeries. He provides a range of treatments for patients with various gynaecological conditions including pelvic pain (endometriosis, PID adenomyosis, fibroids, ovarian cyst), heavy periods (fibroids, adenomyosis), cervical abnormalities, ovarian/ adnexal masses, and early endometrial or gynaecological related cancers.

He also has expertise in fertility surgeries, laparoscopic reception of endometriosis and laparoscopic hysterectomy.

Mr Gnanachandran is IOTA (International Ovarian Tumour Analysis) certified for ovarian cyst/ ovarian cancer scanning and he performs Uterus scanning based on IETA (International Endometrial Tumour Analysis) for irregular bleeding. He routinely assesses for deep endometriosis when scanning for pelvic pain in young women and has previously performed over 50 laparoscopic hysterectomies in a 12-month period for fibroids, adenomyosis, and endometrial cancer conditions.

He is well known for his practice in the below clinic areas:

  • Gynaecology scans and ovarian cyst assessment for cancer and benign conditions. As of January 2022, he is the only person nationally to offer 3D TVS for fibroids and uterine abnormality, HyCOSY for tubal patency and IOTA/ adnexal model assessment of ovarian cyst for risk malignancy.
  • Laparoscopic hysterectomies including on patients with fibroids, heavy menstrual periods and early endometrial cancer;. He performs around 90% of hysterectomies laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) and in 2021 he performed more than 50 Laparoscopic complete hysterectomies with a conversion to open surgery of less than 3%.
  • Fibroids-Myomectomy: (Laparoscopic if less than four fibroids - open if more than four fibroids or large calcified fibroids)
  • Endometriosis: Stage 1-3. Stage 4 patients are sent to the endometriosis centre.
  • Hysteroscopy, hysteroscopic removal of polyp and resection of fibroids. He uses mechanical removal of polyps and bipolar/ monopolar resection of fibroids.
  • Colposcopy and treatment of Cervical precancer and early cervical cancer. He is accredited in colposcopy and follows National cervical screening and local guidelines to avoid unnecessary treatment.

Mr Gnanachandran was appointed as a Consultant at Northampton General Hospital in 2016 and was tasked with helping to improve the fertility and gynaecological services, specifically minimally invasive surgery and gynaecology scans.

Since joining he has developed the service through the introduction and provision of training in new and advanced scanning techniques, ultimately helping to streamline the provision of treatment. He also developed, led and trained nurses in a one-stop rapid access care provision pathway for patients with all four types of suspected gynaecology cancer. Or for those with cancer symptoms.

His current post includes leadership in emergency gynaecology, fertility services and rapid access care (patients with suspected cancer).

In addition to his consulting work at NGH he also acts as Primary Investigator for 2 research studies, namely:

  • ROCkeTS: A study looking at improving tests for ovarian cancer in an ovarian cyst, pelvic mass, high ca 125 and ovarian cancer symptoms
  • PROTECTOR is a research study for women who are at an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer.

In 2021 Mr Gnanachandran was awarded a certificate of excellence from iwantgreatcare, trusted website for healthcare reviews, for delivering outstanding and quality care. Click here for more information.
