Personal profile

Dr Craig Mowat graduated from the University of Glasgow and was trained in gastroenterology on the West of Scotland training programme. He was appointed Consultant in 2002 at Ninewells Hospital & Medical School. His main interests are in illnesses affecting the colon and he is the first author of the UK Guidelines on the Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Adults. 

Craig has led research in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and the early detection of bowel cancer. He has a large clinical practice in the NHS and teaches colonoscopy skills as a member of faculty on the National training courses hosted in Dundee.

Clinical Interests

Dr Craig Mowat has a particular interest in investigating patients with altered bowel habits. He looks after and treats patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s Disease), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). He is skilled in endoscopy and colonoscopy and has an interest in bowel cancer screening and detection and removal of adenomas.

A new pilot scheme has been launched by NHS Tayside which could greatly advance the detection of bowel cancer.

The qFIT can detect which patients are unlikely to have cancer, removing the need for a colonoscopy.
