Consultant Q&A Orthopaedic Surgery

"A clinical advisor to the Department of Health, he is one of Europe's leading surgeons in developing a protocol to help patients recover more quickly from knee and hip surgery".

Mr Houlihan-Burne is a lower limb reconstruction surgeon, specialising in knee surgery, both of sports injuries and arthritis. He trained at St Mary’s Hospital London and undertook specialist fellowship training in sports knee surgery at the Jonathan Webb Clinic, Bristol.

He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Knee surgeon at The Hillingdon and Mount Vernon Hospital in 2005 and has built up a lower limb surgery practice, providing care for many local amateur and semi-professional sports players.

He has a particular interest in knee ligament surgery, as well as the treatment of knee arthritis in the younger patient, including knee and ankle cartilage transplantation.

He teaches and lectures at a number of national and international conferences on knee surgery and pioneered ‘Rapid Recovery Programme TM’ ,in the United Kingdom, an innovative patient centred approach to hip and knee replacement surgery.

His research interests include ligament reconstruction, rapid recovery from surgery, and cartilage transplantation. As well as being a sports knee surgeon, Mr Houlihan-Burne himself competes in road running events and Triathlons throughout the year.
