After St Andrews and Manchester Universities David spent his early training around Manchester. He then completed specialist Orthopaedic training in Yorkshire, including a Fellowship in joint replacement surgery in Leeds.

In 2000 his Consultant appointment at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) brought him back home.

His professional interests have developed as the orthopaedic scene in Manchester has changed. Since the instigation of Major Trauma Centres nationally to look after the most severely injured patients he has been the lead for Major Trauma at MRI.

Reflecting his interest in emergency trauma he has provided competitor medical cover at a variety of sporting events, including the Formula 1 British Grand Prix, 2015 Rugby World Cup, and continues with a Manchester professional football club.

As well as clinical work he acts as a trainer for all levels of medical professional. This includes Medical Students and mentoring early years doctors. He provides specialist training to therapists, nursing staff, trainee doctors and consultant colleagues.

He has featured prominently in the streamlining and reorganisationn of trauma services in Greater Manchester to provide reproducible excellent care to all trauma patients wherever they are injured in the conurbation. This included importing the concept of rib fracture fixation practiced in other Trauma Centres to Manchester.
