Mr Huw Jenkins is a Consultant Ophthalmic and Vitreoretinal Surgeon, at Hywel Dda University Health Board. He is based at Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen.
Mr Jenkins treats all aspects of Ophthalmology and has sub-specialist expertise in the management of retinal conditions. After qualifying from Nottingham University Medical School in 2001, he completed the All-Wales Ophthalmology specialist registrar higher training rotation and then undertook a vitreoretinal fellowship at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and King Edward VII, Windsor before appointment to his current Consultant post in 2015.
Mr Jenkins has a particular interest in cataract surgery and teaches cataract surgery within the NHS. He specialises in the management of complex cataract cases, revision surgery, secondary lens implant, toric lens, dislocated lenses and cataract surgery complications.
Mr Jenkins has established and leads the new vitreoretinal surgery service for Hywel Dda, managing acute retinal problems (such as retinal detachment, macula hole, vitreous haemorrhage, epiretinal membrane, diabetic retinopathy and trauma). He is also the diabetic retinopathy lead and runs the urgent laser service at Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli and provides a range of intra-vitreal treatments (such as anti-VEGF and Ozurdex) at Amman Valley Hospital for conditions such as AMD, diabetic maculopathy and retinal vein occlusion.
