Hynek Mergental works at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham as a Consultant Liver Transplant and Multi-Organ Retrieval Surgeon, in addition to his role as Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham. His clinical expertise covers liver transplantation, surgical procedures in patients with cirrhosis, and the management of patients with liver disease. Besides operations for biliary strictures, Mr Mergental has a particular interest in reconstructive surgery for complex incisional hernias after liver transplantations and major abdominal operations. In his private practice he specialises mainly in hernia surgery.
Mr. Mergental’s wide ranging experience encompasses practising in several major transplant centres around the world. Having graduated from Charles University in Prague in 2000 and completing his surgical training, Mr. Mergental won scholarships to Kansai Medical University in Osaka and Kyoto University in Japan.He subsequently undertook a liver transplant and hepatobiliary fellowship at the University Medical Centre in Groningen in the Netherlands. After gaining a doctorate in Experimental Surgery in 2008 he worked at transplant units in Rotterdam, Oxford and London.
Mr. Mergental has published widely in the field of liver transplantation, primarily liver cancer and organ preservation. He performed a landmark European study on liver transplantation for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma in non-cirrhotic livers. Since his appointment in Birmingham in 2010 his main research interest has focused on machine liver perfusion. He established the Liver Perfusion Group at the University of Birmingham in 2013 and has been an investigator in several machine perfusion clinical trials. His team pioneered the viability testing of discarded livers and the Group recently received the Wellcome Trust Health Innovation Challenge Fund to validate the viability criteria and to study pathways involved in the resuscitation of high-risk liver grafts.
Hynek is father to two boys and in his leisure time is a keen photographer. He enjoys riding motorbikes, downhill skiing and adventure travelling.
