Mr Ian Welch grew up locally but studied medicine at Sheffield University Medical School. He underwent surgical training in the Sheffield and South Yorkshire region until he took up his current consultant surgeon post at Wythenshawe in 2001. His current practice is within general surgery but with a specific interest in laparoscopic surgery and benign and malignant upper gastrointestinal surgery.
He practices according to the principles of enhanced recovery and pre-operative optimisation. He is the lead clinician for the South Manchester Oesophago-gastric team that is proud to report the best clinical outcomes in the North West and one of the highest in England.
In addition to his clinical and surgical responsibilities, he has other managerial roles:
- Speciality Lead, Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, UHSM
- Lead Cancer Clinician, UHSM
- Lead Clinician for Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer, UHSM
- Chairman of the South Manchester Venousthromboembelism Committee
His research interests include clinical and immune-histochemical aspects of oesophageal and gastric cancer disease and human gastrointestinal physiology. He has published extensively in these areas.
