Mr Jain Bhaskara Pillai graduated Medical School in 1992 from Kerala, his beautiful ancestral land of coconut palms on the south western tip of the Indian sub-continent.
He has amassed a truly international education, experience and outlook. Born and schooled in the State of Brunei to GCE ‘O’ Levels, his specialist training in Cardiac Surgery started in the North East Deanery at the Regional centre at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne in 1999. This was consolidated in Canada at the Toronto General Hospital under the visionary tutelage of an icon Dr Tirone David and team, and then expanded in the USA before returning to his home in the UK. In the USA he had the opportunity to train in and experience a cutting-edge institution, the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota), the birthplace of the first commercially successful heart lung machine (Mayo-Gibbon) in 1955 and ‘routine’ Open-Heart Surgery. In New York, he trained in his area of interest in Thoracic Aorta surgery (Aneurysm) where he researched and published his work.
Mr Pillai joined the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire as a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon in 2011. He is not risk averse and underpins his daily care with meticulous personal attention to detail. His skill in Coronary artery bypass grafting and Aortic valve replacement puts the smile back in his patient’s life. His expertise in Thoracic aorta surgery include Aortic Root Replacement, Ascending and Total Arch Replacement with dedicated brain protection strategies. He has a surgical lead role in the post-operative intensive care management.
Jain enjoys spending time with those who seek his care and will spend as much time in the OPD to simplify, provide clarity and patiently explain all the medical terminology to his patients.
With a Masters in Medical Education and a meritorious academic record, he understands Knowledge is patient safety and is dedicated to Consultant led interactive teaching responsive to the different learning styles.
A private person in his free time, his discerning ear for high fidelity music resonates with the Devaliet Phantom French system. Some of his favourite musicians are from Newcastle upon Tyne - Sting and Mark Knopfler who certainly excite the Phantom and soothes the mind.
